1.  I would rather spend more time in my studio?  Do I have to market my work or can I hire someone?

It's been my experience that most customers like to deal directly with the artist or craftsman.  Most art fair promoters require that the creator to be at the booth for the same reason.  If you plan on wholesaling, you may want to contact an art representative.  However, know that they are only wanting to deal with professionals who know their wholesale business.

On the other hand, I like to do my art marketing on Mondays.  I like to spend the whole day taking care of business and then I start on my making art the next day.  Setting a day to market your work is imperative, as I know most people want to be in their studio. Unfortunately, artists and craftsmen have to wear many hats!  They are the creator and the sales person! Once you get into the practice, it will become second nature.  You will take your creative talents and be creative with your marketing efforts.

The market will not pay that price.

2.  How do I price my work?

Pricing your work is a work of art in itself.  There are many many factors besides your cost and labor that goes into pricing.  Are you a beginner or have you been doing this for 20 years?  Obviously the mature artists can ask more for their work.  Ask yourself honestly, how does the quality of your work compare with others.  If your quality is less than most, you will need to charge less.  What will the market bear for your item?  For example, if you are a potter, a mug could costs from $8 - $22, so you need to stay in that price range.  Some painters like price their work per square inch.  It is difficult for me to price your work without a seeing a body of your work. I address the pricing dilemma in my book and I could do a phone consultation with you if need be.  502-637-8676. cundiff222@aol.com
